Annie Jr. ServantsThat’s right, we’ve only been in business for a little over four months and we’ve already produced a show.

Sixteen students took on the challenge of a ten-week Musical Theatre Workshop, meeting every Saturday from 9am – noon. Their hard work paid off with two fabulous performances of Annie Jr. on April 5th and 6th.

We’re so proud of these young artists. Look inside for some of their reflections on the whole experience.

A shy girl from a
Small Town
When I was just 4 years old ...

…Mom and Dad thought dance lessons might help me overcome my severe shyness. Thank goodness they tried it, because they were right! Dance became one of the easiest ways for me to express myself as I went through school, especially for a girl who didn’t very much like her own voice. Later I found another outlet in theatre where I could explore myself through different characters. It felt safe.

Although it was always a struggle to pay for my dance lessons, acting, dance competitions, and summer training sessions, I will forever be grateful to my parents for finding opportunities and ways for me to continue in the performing arts.

I gained so much self-esteem and confidence as I began to achieve my dreams on stage. When I was 10, I knew I just had to teach everything I was learning to other kids my age, so they could see all they could achieve too (but only after I made it really big…ha!). In fact, when I was 15 I told my guidance counselor that I planned on opening a performing arts studio. It was pretty “out-there” for small-town Indiana. Our town had only one stoplight. Talk about tiny! My senior graduating class had 92 kids in it (gathered from 2 counties). The performing arts were not considered important in our rural farming community. They weren’t very accessible either! Mom and I would drive 50 miles to dance class after school 3-4 times a week. Then I would dance from 4:00-9:00 PM straight. After dancing we’d drive 50 miles back home, and I’d do my homework, go to bed and do it again the next day.

Now I realize that’s an extreme scenario, but I believe in the power of the performing arts. I believe the performing arts can be used as a tool to increase poise, discipline, self-confidence, friendships, communication and exploration of self and Truth, not only in the truly dedicated students but even for the recreational students.

Our name “Relevé” means raised up or lifted up — and that’s what we do: provide the best training in an environment that lifts up each student. Thank you all for joining Relevé on this exciting journey.

Being a part of the Annie Cast was great. I got to work with great kids and adults who had a positive influence on me. Miss Jodi and Miss Thia have become very special to me and were great to work with. I hope I am able to work with them more often!! Thanks for allowing me to be a part of such a great cast and in the presence of wonderful teachers!!!”

—Jasmine (“Grace”)

Being in Annie made me happy and glad. I was excited every Saturday to go to the Annie rehearsal and see all my friends from Theatre Dance Class and my new friends that I made while participating in this play. I want to thank Jodi for letting me participate in her production. I loved it!”

—Jenna (“Orphan Suzie”)

Annie Jr. Hard Knock Life

I had a great experience doing Annie Jr. at Relevé because the teachers gave personal time helping me with challenges. Thia, the director, helped me learn to cheat out. Jodi, the dance instructor, helped me learn the dances. Ray, the voice instructor, helped me with the vocals. I learned so much in just ten weeks of rehearsals. I also made a lot of friends. I really want to do it again in the fall.”

—Jessica (“Annie”)
